The first Bidstrup who immigrated to Australia

This is the story of the first Bidstrup, who immigrated to Australia.

Niels Bidstrup was born 1810 in Aakirkeby on the island of Bornholm in the Baltic see, he was the eldest of Smallholder Hans Bistrup and Anna Cathrine Hansdatter's two children.

It is not known when he left Bornholm, but 1833, November 22. he married Kirstine Holm in Helligaandskirken in Copenhagen. At that time, he was recorded a sailor.

The couple had given birth to a daughter, Anne Kirstine Bidstrup, who was born 1833, October 31. - this birth was out of wedlock and that's was the reason they got married.

Niels lived in 1833 at Strand no. 14 in Copenhagen and according to the following census of 1840, he was inserted into prison - I have not yet figured out why he was deployed there.

He traveled to Australia, leaving his wife and child back in Copenhagen. Whether he traveled voluntarily or were deported is not known, but Kirstine later married Hans Andersen Schou, so she must have suspected that he had died on the trip to Australia.

Next time we hear about Niels Bidstrup is when he has a child in 1843 with Esther Hounsom whom he later married in 1846, together they get these children:

  1. John William Bidstrup, born 1843 in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia
  2. Marcelle Bidstrup, born 1847 in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia
  3. George Bidstrup, born 1849 in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia
  4. Annie Maria Bidstrup, born 1851 in Tam O'Shanter Belt, South Australia, Australia
  5. Esther Louise Bidstrup, born 1853 in Collingwood, Victoria, Australia
  6. Niels Bidstrup, born 1855 in Collingwood, Victoria, Australia
  7. Selina Bidstrup, born 1858 in Kilmore, Victoria, Australia
  8. Catherine Bidstrup, born 1860 in Kilmore, Victoria, Australia
  9. Peter Bidstrup, born 1862 in Kilmore, Victoria, Australia
He applied for citizenship in Adelaide and it was granted 1849, August 1., at the time he had stayed in Australia for 4 years.

Niels and Esther had to move from Unley, Adelaide, South Australia because of the high taxes levied by the state, they traveled by horse and cart to Melbourne, where they settled in Thomastown. They later moved to Kilmore, where Niels established himself as a cabinetmaker - he and his business later moved to Broadford where their youngest son Peter was born. There is a street in Broadford named after him - "Bidstrup Avenue".

  1. John William Bidstrup, født 1843 i Adelaide, South Australia, Australia
  2. Marcelle Bidstrup, født 1847 i Adelaide, South Australia, Australia
  3. George Bidstrup, født 1849 i Adelaide, South Australia, Australia
  4. Annie Maria Bidstrup, født 1851 i Tam O´Shanter Belt, South Australia, Australia
  5. Esther Louise Bidstrup, født 1853 i Collingwood, Victoria, Australia
  6. Niels Bidstrup, født 1855 i Collingwood, Victoria, Australia
  7. Selina Bidstrup, født 1858 i Kilmore, Victoria, Australia
  8. Catherine Bidstrup, født 1860 i Kilmore, Victoria, Australia
  9. Peter Bidstrup, født 1862 i Kilmore, Victoria, Australia
